But it’s not a number- it's a process. Metabolism is how your cells produce, distribute, and manage energy. It's the biological operating system beneath every other function: mood, digestion, recovery, hormones, focus, weight. And if it’s not working well, no gadget, stack, or protocol is going to override the effects.

What Metabolism Really Is

Metabolism is the sum of all biochemical reactions in the body that convert food into usable energy. This includes:

Basal metabolic processes (like breathing and cell repair)

Hormonal signaling (thyroid, insulin, leptin)

Mitochondrial energy production

Cellular cleanup and repair (autophagy)

When it’s running smoothly, you feel steady, focused, resilient. When it’s sluggish or overloaded- due to processed foods, blood sugar spikes, poor sleep, or stress- you start to feel the drag.

Why It Matters to Biohackers (and Everyone Else)

Improving metabolic function sets the foundation for:

More stable energy (without caffeine dependence)

Improved blood sugar control and fewer cravings

Better hormone balance and appetite regulation

Stronger immune response and recovery

Sharper cognition with less mental fatigue

Many people try to improve these individually- more electrolytes for energy, adaptogens for focus, probiotics for gut health- but when you restore and strengthen metabolic function through diet, you’re optimizing the very foundation these systems are built on- naturally.

Signs Your Metabolism Might Need a Tune-Up

Energy crashes after meals

Afternoon brain fog

Cravings that feel compulsive

Weight that won’t budge

Restless sleep or wired-but-tired nights

Constant snacking or needing food to “feel normal”

Sound familiar? These aren’t willpower issues. They’re symptom’s associated with sugar addiction and biochemical signals from a metabolism that’s out of sync.

Metabolic Biohacks That Work
And how to maximize them through diet

To be clear, I’m a fan of biohacking and support any natural treatment or supplement that helps us feel better and live longer. But trying to biohack with a damaged metabolism is a bit like taking a beat-up, poorly maintained car through the car wash.

It might shine for a minute, but the real problems are still under the hood.

Start with a solid foundation—a repaired and optimized metabolism—and you’ll get far more out of whatever biohacking tools you choose to use. The three steps below are a must for any serious biohacker and can all be achieved through a simple, metabolic focused diet.

1. Stabilize Blood Sugar

Every spike followed by a crash signals your body to store fat and ramp up stress hormones. Flattening that curve leads to:

Fewer mood swings

Less hunger

More metabolic flexibility (burning fat instead of sugar)

Start with: protein-heavy meals, lower-carb breakfasts, walking after eating.

**If you would like more information on proper metabolic diet, you can grab my free 3-step guide Here.

2. Improve Mitochondrial Health

Mitochondria are your cellular power plants. Support them and everything runs smoother.

What helps:

Quality sleep

Moderate movement (especially walking + strength training)

Nutrient-dense foods with minerals like magnesium, zinc, and CoQ10

3. Reduce Inflammation

Chronic low-grade inflammation interferes with insulin, blocks hormone signaling, and dulls your energy output.

Swap out:

Industrial seed oils (canola, soybean, corn)

Ultra-processed carbs

Excess alcohol

Swap in:

Olive oil, avocado, and animal fats

Colorful, organic vegetables, especially greens

Omega-3s (from wild fish or pasture-raised meats)

My Personal Experience

I didn’t set out to “biohack.” I just wanted to stop the trend I was seeing in my labs; rising blood pressure, worsening inflammation, and talk of more prescriptions. But once I focused on fixing my metabolism, the benefits snowballed.

My weight dropped naturally (60 pounds without counting calories)

My skin looked better

My energy evened out

My head felt clearer, calmer

I didn’t need a tracker to tell me it was working- I could feel it. And now that I have a solid foundation, I’ve started experimenting with some small biohacks (methylene blue, NAC, L-theanine) and really like the results so far.

Metabolism First. Everything Else Second.

Whether you're dipping your toe into biohacking or just tired of the same diet hamster wheel, the truth is: you can’t out-hack a broken metabolism.

But when you fix it, even partially, you unlock better results from everything else you do. You become more responsive to training. More sensitive to hormone cues. More tuned in to what your body actually needs.

If You’re Curious Where to Start

If this resonates with you; if you’ve been stacking supplements, trying new plans, but still feel off. Start by repairing metabolism first. You don’t need to overhaul your life. Just focus on a few key fundamentals.

You can find them all in my free guide.

Naturaldietfreedom.com/freeguide

Thanks for reading,

Ron

P.S. Better Thermoregulation & Feeling Less Overheated

One of the first changes I noticed: I stopped feeling hot all the time. I used to keep the thermostat at 66°F and still sweat just thinking about going outside. That changed once I improved my metabolism.

As we age, our ability to regulate body temperature declines. Blood vessels in the skin become less responsive, sweat glands don’t work as efficiently, and excess body fat traps heat. Obesity and insulin resistance both amplify this.

As metabolism improves- through fat loss, better insulin sensitivity, and lower inflammation- the body becomes more efficient at dissipating heat. Skin blood flow normalizes, and sweat patterns stabilize. It’s not just more comfortable. It’s a signal your internal systems are working better.

2. Skin Health: Firmer, Clearer, More Resilient

After about a year of eating for metabolic health, I noticed a visual shift: clearer skin, better tone, tighter jawline. When I first lost the weight, there was some looseness (not flying squirrel loose- just a little if I looked close). But months later, things had noticeably firmed up.

This isn’t just anecdotal. Skin is one of the most metabolically active organs. Insulin resistance, blood sugar spikes, and chronic inflammation all accelerate skin aging. They damage collagen, increase oxidative stress, and impair the skin’s ability to regenerate.

When you stabilize your metabolism:

Collagen breakdown slows

Cellular repair improves

Inflammatory skin signals drop

Even weight loss contributes- shedding excess fat removes dysfunctional fat cells that release pro-aging inflammatory cytokines. Healthy fat tissue helps regulate hormones and skin health. In my case, this translated into skin that not only looked younger but felt more resilient.

3. Cellular Longevity: The Real Anti-Aging Engine

This is where things get science-y.

Metabolic health doesn’t just make you feel younger, it activates key anti-aging pathways at the cellular level, especially involving AMPK, sirtuins, and autophagy.

What is AMPK?

AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) is like a cellular fuel gauge. When energy is low, AMPK flips the switch to burn fat, repair cells, and improve insulin sensitivity. It helps prevent age-related diseases by encouraging the body to conserve energy for essential functions. You can boost AMPK activity through:

Exercise

Fasting or time-restricted eating

Reducing refined carbs and sugar

All of which happen naturally when you follow a metabolic repair approach.

What are sirtuins?

Sirtuins are a group of proteins that regulate inflammation, metabolism, and DNA repair. They’re often called “longevity genes” because activating them has been linked to longer lifespan and reduced disease risk. Sirtuins are especially sensitive to NAD+ levels- a molecule that rises when you're metabolically efficient, eating fewer processed foods, and avoiding insulin spikes.

They take care of cellular maintenance and keep things running smoothly behind the scenes.

What is autophagy?

Autophagy means “self-eating.” It’s the body’s way of cleaning house- breaking down old or damaged cells and recycling the parts to make new, healthier ones. When autophagy is active, your body gets better at repairing itself and reducing the buildup of cellular “junk” that contributes to aging.

Metabolic stress (from poor diet, blood sugar spikes, and insulin resistance) suppresses autophagy. But when you optimize metabolism- especially by spacing out meals and reducing processed carbs- autophagy gets reactivated.

Together, AMPK, sirtuins, and autophagy form a metabolic trifecta that:

Improves mitochondrial function

Reduces inflammation

Promotes DNA repair

Keeps tissues biologically younger

You can’t see these processes, but you can feel them- especially in energy, clarity, and how your body handles stress.

4. Mood Stability & Mental Quiet

Improving my mental health wasn’t the goal when I started eating differently. I was really just trying to improve my numbers- cholesterol, A1C, inflammation markers. But over time, I began to notice a steady unraveling of the constant tension I’d lived with for years. The anxiety began to fade. My thoughts felt less scattered. And I no longer felt stuck in that wired-but-tired state I’d come to think of as normal.

Here’s what’s happening:

Blood sugar crashes activate the stress hormone cortisol

Insulin resistance interferes with neurotransmitter production

Inflammation in the brain increases emotional reactivity

Once those inputs are removed, your nervous system can reset. The neurotransmitter GABA- which calms the brain- is particularly sensitive to metabolic dysfunction. And when you eat to stabilize blood sugar and reduce inflammation, GABA activity rebounds.

The result is fewer mood swings, more mental quiet, and a kind of “even keel” that becomes your new normal. If you’ve lived with persistent anxiety or a racing mind, the internal stillness that comes with metabolic repair feels profound.

5. Strength, Muscle, and Sustainable Energy

As metabolism improves, energy becomes more stable- not in jolts from caffeine or sugar, but in quiet, consistent endurance. You also become more efficient at maintaining muscle mass, especially with even light physical activity like walking.

More muscle means:

Higher resting metabolism

Better glucose control

Stronger bones and joints as you age

It isn’t body sculpting, it’s metabolic reserve- the buffer your body draws on as you get older.

Recap: Anti-Aging Effects of an Optimized Metabolism

Thermoregulation
Improved blood flow, reduced inflammation, balanced hormone signaling

Skin Health
Lowered oxidative stress, improved collagen renewal, healthier fat tissue

Cellular Longevity
Activation of AMPK, sirtuins, and autophagy for better repair & DNA integrity

Mood Balance
Reduced cortisol, better neurotransmitter synthesis (GABA, serotonin)

Muscle & Energy
Improved mitochondrial function, muscle retention, and insulin sensitivity

That’s a lot of benefit with (my personal opinion) little effort- Just by eating what we were always meant to eat.

If You’re Wondering Whether It’s Worth It…

I didn’t set out to reverse aging. I set out to fix what was broken. But in the process, I feel younger than I have in a decade- and look a little younger as a bonus. Not because of creams or supplements, but because my cells are finally working the way they should.

If you're dealing with fatigue, inflammation, stubborn weight, or mood swings, the solution might not be "more effort"- it might be metabolism.

If you would like to know what I did to improve my metabolic health, you can get a copy of my free guide right here:

Naturaldietfreedom.com/free-guide

Thanks for reading

Ron

Share

Naturaldietfreedom.com

Is Your Metabolism Making You Anxious?

The Surprising Link Between Diet and Mental Health

RonT

I didn’t change the way I eat to feel better mentally. I was focused on the numbers- blood pressure, triglycerides, A1C. My lab results were trending in the wrong direction, and I felt like I was being funneled toward a life of prescriptions and routine side effects. My sole goal was to fix that trajectory.

But along the way, something surprising happened.

Not only did I lose weight and see my labs normalize… things started to feel quieter in my head.

To be clear: the biggest change in my day-to-day stress levels came when I retired. That was like someone slowly turning down the volume on life for the first time in years. But the deeper shift- the steady improvement in how I felt mentally- didn’t come from walking away from work.

It came from fixing my metabolism.

It was gradual, and at first I didn’t make the connection. But over time, it became obvious: the more my blood sugar stabilized, the less reactive I felt. I wasn’t riding those sharp up-and-down spikes that had been baked into my day for decades.

More stable energy. Fewer crashes. And a strange new feeling of “even keel” that I hadn’t experienced since my 20s.

And as the anxiety dissipated, something happened that I didn’t expect at all.

I started having recognizable moments of happiness.

Not loud, euphoric happiness. More like quiet but intense satisfaction. Calm, present-moment awareness. I noticed it during the simplest parts of my day- driving my tractor, working with my dogs, walking on my road. It was subtle but undeniable. I felt good, and not in a way that depended on anything external. Just steady contentment. And I realized it had been missing for a very long time.

At first I thought maybe I was imagining it. But the science says otherwise.

Here’s what’s really happening inside the body:

When you improve metabolic health- especially through real food, movement, and reduced inflammation- you change what’s happening inside the brain, too. Chronically elevated insulin and blood sugar lead to oxidative stress and neuroinflammation, which are strongly associated with increased risk of mood disorders like anxiety and depression.

When metabolism is impaired, blood sugar swings trigger cortisol spikes, which keep your stress response system in overdrive. Over time, this contributes to anxiety, irritability, and sleep disturbances. Restoring metabolic balance reduces these stress signals at the source.

Metabolic dysfunction also disrupts neurotransmitter synthesis. Insulin resistance and chronic inflammation interfere with the availability of key nutrients needed for dopamine, serotonin, and GABA production- all critical to mood regulation. When the body begins to heal, those systems start working again. Brain fog lifts. Mood stabilizes. And for many people, anxiety starts to ease- sometimes dramatically.

Gamma-aminobutyric acid (aka GABA), is the brain’s primary inhibitory neurotransmitter. GABA helps calm the nervous system, reduce anxiety, and promote a sense of emotional stability. But its function is deeply intertwined with your metabolic health and insulin plays a key role in regulating GABA signaling. When insulin resistance develops, it disrupts how glucose is used in the brain, which in turn can impair GABA synthesis and receptor sensitivity. Low GABA activity has been associated with heightened anxiety, insomnia, and even panic-like symptoms. I was well acquainted with all of them.

Interestingly, GABA also interacts with serotonin pathways- both systems work together to maintain emotional balance. And because both neurotransmitters depend on adequate metabolic function (including nutrient availability and mitochondrial efficiency), a sluggish metabolism can blunt their effects. When people shift toward metabolically supportive eating- reducing blood sugar spikes, increasing nutrient density, and improving insulin sensitivity- GABA activity tends to rebound. And GABA doesn’t exist in a vacuum- it’s made from glutamate, an excitatory neurotransmitter that needs to be carefully balanced in the brain. The conversion of glutamate to GABA depends on an enzyme called glutamic acid decarboxylase (GAD), which itself relies on key nutrients like vitamin B6 and magnesium. That’s a lot of science but hang in there…

Here’s where metabolism steps in again:

Blood sugar imbalances, insulin resistance, and chronic inflammation can all impair this conversion. When glutamate builds up and GABA drops off, it creates the perfect internal storm- a wired but exhausted state that leaves you feeling anxious, irritable, or mentally overstimulated.

Astrocytes- the support cells in your brain- also play a major role. They help clear excess glutamate and recycle it into GABA, but they require healthy mitochondrial energy production to do this efficiently. In other words, your brain’s ability to regulate its own calm-down chemistry depends heavily on how well your cells are producing and using energy.

Poor metabolic function chokes that system- while metabolic repair turns it back on:

This might explain why people who focus on metabolic health often report a return of “mental quiet.” Not just fewer panic moments or emotional swings, but a noticeable shift toward balance. Real food, stabilized blood sugar, better sleep, and lowered inflammation aren’t just physical wins- they’re the raw materials your brain needs to make the calming neurotransmitters that help you feel like yourself again.

I didn’t know any of that when I started. I just knew I didn’t want to keep going in the direction I was headed.

I wasn’t trying to “be strong” or “clean up my lifestyle.” I wasn’t counting calories or tracking macros. I was trying to fix the real problem, the root cause- the one my doctor wasn’t talking about: a broken metabolism.

Once I got past the sugar withdrawal, I noticed I wasn’t constantly hungry anymore. And without meaning to, I started eating less- but feeling more satisfied. I had fewer cravings. Fewer energy dips. And this strange new mental clarity that crept in gradually until one day I realized… it had been weeks since I’d felt anxious.

It wasn’t magic. It was metabolic.

I wish someone had told me sooner:

Living with anxiety- especially the kind that never quite turns off- isn’t just stressful. It’s exhausting. There’s no off switch, no true rest. And eventually, it starts to feel normal. But it’s not. You’re not supposed to feel that way. And more importantly, you don’t have to feel that way.

If that’s where you are right now- worn down, on edge, wondering what’s wrong with you- you’re not broken. You’re just stuck in a system that was never built to keep you healthy.

Changing how you eat might not seem like the answer. But for me- and for a lot of people- it was the thing that made everything else start to work again.

It doesn’t have to be perfect. You don’t have to “do it right.” You just have to start.

And if you want to try it for yourself, or you’re just curious to know how I did it- there’s a free guide here that walks you through the same 3 core changes I made.

https://www.naturaldietfreedom.com/freeguide

Thanks for reading Natural Diet Freedom Substack! Well, that was just discipline and willpower.

Then I changed how I ate.

And within two weeks, the cravings that had followed me for years… were just gone.

Not suppressed. Not “managed.”

Gone.

It was pretty amazing.

What I experienced in that short window changed how I thought about food, metabolism, and even willpower itself. This post is about what cravings really are, why they fade so quickly when the body begins to heal, and how some of the foods we crave most are the ones doing the most damage.

Cravings Aren’t Harmless. They’re Signals.

Most people treat cravings like background noise. Just something to tolerate or satisfy.

But cravings are signals. And like any good signal, they are trying to tell you something is off.

Especially if they happen often.

Especially if they feel urgent, persistent, or disconnected from real hunger.

The Science of Cravings (and Why They Hit So Hard)

When you eat high-sugar foods, refined grains, or foods fried in seed oils, you’re not just feeding your body. You’re flipping switches in your brain.

These foods cause:

Blood sugar spikes, followed by sharp crashes, which trigger hunger, mood swings, and more cravings

Dopamine surges, lighting up the same brain pathways as addictive substances

Gut-brain disruption, where your microbiome begins to favor bacteria that thrive on fast fuel

Leptin resistance, making it harder for your brain to register fullness

Grains and sugar convert to glucose very quickly. That spike in blood sugar is followed by a crash. And your body wants to recover by chasing the thing that caused the spike in the first place.

Seed oils add another layer of trouble. They contribute to cellular inflammation, disrupt mitochondria, and interfere with the very systems that regulate energy and satiety.

Cravings Are Clues: What Else Might Be Going On?

If you’re getting strong cravings regularly, it’s often a red flag. Something deeper is off in the body.

Frequent cravings are tied to:

Insulin resistance

Type 2 diabetes

Fatty liver disease (NAFLD)

Central obesity

Hormonal imbalances like PCOS or low testosterone

Even mental health issues like anxiety and depression have links to blood sugar instability and metabolic dysfunction.

So cravings are not just about food. They are often early warning signs of something much bigger.

What Happens When You Stop Feeding the Fire

When I cut out added sugars, refined grains, and seed oils, I wasn’t sure what to expect: better labs, potentially lose some weight, maybe more energy.

What I did not expect was how quickly my relationship with food would change.

For me, the cravings faded in less than two weeks. And when they were gone, something shifted. Hunger no longer felt urgent or emotional. It became calm and steady. And even more surprising- food started tasting incredible.

Not just once in a while. Consistently.

Every meal feels satisfying now. Even simple meals. My body craves what it actually needs, and that alone is one of the biggest changes I’ve noticed. It’s not about resisting anything anymore. There is nothing to resist. I don’t think about food unless I’m hungry, and when I do eat, it feels right.

I’m no longer chasing pleasure from food. I’m receiving it.

And that is something I never even considered before.

It’s Not Willpower. It’s Physiology.

If you're reading this and thinking, “There’s no way I could give up sweets or bread or pizza,” I get it.

I thought the same thing. Most people do.

When you’re still inside that loop, it feels impossible. It feels like you’ll never stop missing those foods. Like life without them would be smaller and less enjoyable.

But here’s the truth.

Once you break that biochemical loop, once you stop feeding the system that creates the cravings, those foods stop calling to you.

And I don’t mean you’ll tolerate life without them. I mean you’ll stop thinking about them.

That was one of the biggest surprises of all.

The foods I used to feel addicted to just don’t matter to me anymore. Not because I convinced myself they’re bad, but because my body just doesn’t ask for them.

You don’t need superhuman discipline. You need a reset. And it starts with understanding what’s really driving the hunger.

If you need a little help getting started

I put together a simple guide with the exact three steps I used to reset my metabolism and stop the cravings at the source.

No cost. No special products needed. Just the actual steps I took that changed everything for me.

🔗 Click here to grab the guide

I hope it gives you the clarity and freedom it gave me. And I hope you’ll stick around- there’s more to talk about.

Be healthy,
Ron T

Subscribe now

What Is Metabolism And Why Is It So Important?

Understanding Metabolism: How Your Body Burns Energy and What Happens When It Breaks Down

RonT

Your metabolism = your health

Metabolism isn’t just about burning calories- it’s about how your body powers every cell, organ, and system. And when it doesn’t work properly, the consequences go far beyond weight gain.

From persistent fatigue to diabetes and heart disease, poor metabolic function has been linked to nearly every major chronic illness. This article explores what metabolism is, how it works at the cellular level, and why fixing it may be the most important thing you do for your long-term health.

What Is Metabolism?

Metabolism refers to the complex series of biochemical processes that convert the food you eat into usable energy. Every cell in your body depends on metabolism to function, whether it’s your heart beating, your brain processing thoughts, or your muscles repairing after a workout.

It’s a constant, invisible process happening inside you all day, every day. Most people associate metabolism with weight loss or energy levels, but its role is much more fundamental.

In simple terms, metabolism is made up of two main phases:
Catabolism (breaking down food into energy)
Anabolism (using that energy to build and repair tissues)

How the Body Turns Food Into Fuel

When you eat, your digestive system breaks food down into its basic building blocks: glucose (from carbohydrates), fatty acids (from fats), and amino acids (from proteins). These molecules then enter your cells and head toward the mitochondria, often referred to as the "powerhouses" of the cell.

Inside the mitochondria, a critical process unfolds: the Krebs Cycle (or citric acid cycle). This cycle produces ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the primary energy molecule your body uses for every biological function. ATP is sometimes called the body's “energy currency.”

When energy is used, ATP loses one of its phosphate molecules and becomes ADP (adenosine diphosphate). The body must then recycle ADP back into ATP to maintain energy production.

This constant cycle of energy conversion is what keeps you alive and functioning.

When Metabolism Fails

When your metabolism isn’t working correctly, due to poor nutrition, chronic stress, lack of sleep, or hormonal imbalance, your body loses the ability to manage energy efficiently. This can result in both excessive fat storage and energy depletion, even when you're eating plenty of food.

And it doesn’t stop with low energy or difficulty losing weight.

Metabolic dysfunction is now understood to be a root cause of many chronic diseases, including:

Cognitive Decline and Alzheimer’s (sometimes referred to as “Type 3 diabetes” due to glucose metabolism dysfunction in the brain)

Heart Disease (tied to chronic inflammation and high triglycerides)

Obesity (often fueled by constant insulin spikes and an inability to burn stored fat)

Non-Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) (caused by excessive fat accumulation in the liver)

Type 2 Diabetes (driven by insulin resistance, where glucose can't properly enter the cells)

As these conditions become more common, understanding how to maintain a healthy metabolism is more important than ever.

The Role of Hormones in Metabolism

Your metabolism doesn’t operate in isolation. It’s tightly regulated by your endocrine (hormone) system.

Here are a few of the most important hormones affecting your metabolic function:

Thyroid Hormones: control the rate of energy production and use

Cortisol: a stress hormone that, when chronically elevated, can lead to fat gain

Leptin: signals when you're full, helping control appetite

Insulin: helps regulate blood sugar and fat storage

It is important to note that when these hormones are out of balance due to poor diet, chronic stress, or lack of physical activity, your metabolic efficiency drops and your risk of chronic disease increases.

Common Signs of a Metabolic Slowdown

Many people live for years with signs of metabolic dysfunction without realizing it. Some of the most common symptoms include:

Sleep disturbances

Bloating or digestive discomfort

Food cravings, especially for sugar

Unexplained weight gain

Brain fog or poor concentration

Constant fatigue

These may seem like everyday annoyances, but over time they often signal the early stages of serious chronic illness.

How to Naturally Support and Improve Metabolism

The good news is that metabolic health can often be improved or even restored without medications by making strategic lifestyle changes.

1. Eat Whole, Nutrient-Dense Foods

Focus on foods that stabilize blood sugar and support hormone health:

Leafy greens

Cruciferous vegetables

Healthy fats (olive oil, avocado, ghee)

Clean proteins (wild fish, grass-fed meat, pasture-raised eggs)

2. Eliminate Metabolism-Wrecking Foods

Avoid these:

Refined sugars

Industrial seed oils (like canola, soybean, corn)

Processed grains

3. Build and Maintain Muscle

Muscle tissue is metabolically active, meaning it burns calories even at rest. Resistance training two to three times per week can help maintain healthy metabolic function.

4. Sleep Well and Manage Stress

Both poor sleep and chronic stress raise cortisol levels, which blunt metabolic efficiency. Aim for seven to nine hours of quality sleep per night and build in daily stress-reducing habits like walking, listening to music, spending time in nature, watching something light and funny, or doing light, satisfying chores like gardening or cooking.

5. Improve Insulin Sensitivity

Fasting, cutting sugar, and balancing meals with fat and protein can all help reduce insulin resistance.

How Your Body Actually Makes Energy: A Closer Look at the Krebs Cycle

We’ve talked about how metabolism is your body’s way of turning food into energy. But what does that actually look like inside your cells?

To understand it, we need to zoom in on the tiny engines inside each cell that make energy production possible. At the center of this system is something called the Krebs Cycle, also known as the citric acid cycle.

This process takes place inside the mitochondria, which are often called the power plants of the cell. That name fits because this is where your body produces ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the main molecule your body uses to power everything it does. ATP fuels thinking, movement, digestion, cell repair, and much more.

Here’s a simplified look at how the process works:

Your body breaks down food, especially carbohydrates (sugars) and fats, into a substance called acetyl-CoA.

At this stage, insulin plays a crucial role by helping glucose from your bloodstream enter your cells, where it can be converted into acetyl-CoA. Without adequate insulin function- or if your cells become resistant to insulin- glucose can't enter efficiently, and the entire energy production process slows down. This is one reason why insulin resistance leads to fatigue, weight gain, and other signs of poor metabolic health.

Acetyl-CoA enters the Krebs Cycle and goes through a series of chemical reactions inside the mitochondria.

These reactions release high-energy electrons, which are picked up by molecules called NADH and FADH₂.

These carrier molecules then transport the electrons to another system known as the electron transport chain.

There, the energy from the electrons is used to create ATP, the fuel your body needs to function.

So what does this mean for you?

When everything in this system is working well, your cells produce a steady supply of energy. However, when something interrupts the process, such as insulin resistance, nutrient deficiencies, chronic inflammation, or exposure to toxins, ATP production slows down. That’s when fatigue, brain fog, weight gain, and other signs of low metabolic function start to show up.

Understanding the Krebs Cycle helps explain why supporting your metabolism is about more than just weight or calories. It’s about giving your cells the fuel they need to keep your entire body running at its best.

Key Takeaways

Metabolism is how your body converts food into energy. It affects everything from weight and mood to disease risk.

You can support your metabolism naturally with smart dietary choices, muscle-building activity, quality sleep, and stress management.

Poor metabolic health is linked to major diseases including diabetes, heart disease, and Alzheimer's.

ATP is the molecule that powers your body, produced through the Krebs Cycle inside the mitochondria.

I hope you found this article helpful and that it gave you a clearer understanding of how your metabolism really works. If you're on a journey to feel better, eat more naturally, or reverse chronic health issues, you're not alone- and you're in the right place.
